When something is "illuminated," it is lit up with light, either by real lamps and lights, or by sunlight - a building can be illuminated at night with colorful lights for a festival. The word can also mean "made clear": if someone's explanation illuminates a difficult idea, it helps you understand it, almost like shining a light on it in your mind. There is also a special old meaning: an "illuminated manuscript" is a old book with gold and painted pictures.
