Illegality is the noun for being against the law. If an action is illegal, its illegality is that fact: the law does not allow it. People also use it for an illegal act, or for the illegal side of a business — the illegality of the trade. It is a formal, paper-and-court word. Though actually, students meet illegal, the adjective, far more often; you reach for illegality when you need a noun. It is about law, not just a bad idea or a rude act. Something can feel wrong and still be legal; something can be illegal even if many people do it. In ordinary talk, people usually say it is illegal or it is against the law, and save illegality for essays, news, and law.
組成From French illégalité, equal to il- (not) + legality, or illegal + -ity (the ending that names a state or quality).
