When a fear, , hope, plan, or accusation is ill-founded, it sits on something that is not true, or on reasons too thin to hold it up. You use it about ideas more than about people: an ill-founded , an ill-founded complaint. It is a fairly careful, written word; at the dinner table people more often say “that’s not based on anything” or “that’s just a story.” Though actually, calling something ill-founded is a little softer than calling it a lie. It says the ground under the idea is bad, not always that someone meant to trick you. News and school writing like it because it sounds fair: you can admit a worry was ill-founded without calling anyone stupid.
ill-founded 是形容詞，用來說恐懼、謠言、希望、計畫或指控，它站的地方不實，或理由太薄弱撐不起來。最常見的是「an ill-founded rumour」，或「an ill-founded complaint」，多用在想法上，較少用來形容人。
這是比較正式、偏書面的字。平常聊天時，人們多半會說「that's not based on anything」，或說那只是故事。要注意，說一件事 ill-founded，比說它是謊言來得溫和，它只是說根據不好，不一定是有人故意要騙人。新聞和學校寫作常用它，因為聽起來公道，可以承認擔心沒有根據，又不用罵人笨。
