Ill-fitting clothes do not fit the person wearing them. They are too big, too small, too tight, too long, or the wrong shape, so they look awkward and often feel uncomfortable. You hear it most with jackets, suits, shoes, and uniforms. People sometimes stretch it in talk to a job or a role that does not suit someone, but the core use is clothes on a body. It is an ordinary, slightly careful word — the kind you find in a shop or in a description of how someone looks. Ill- here means badly: badly fitting.
