Idiocy is something you think is extremely silly or stupid — the act, the plan, or the quality of being that foolish, not the person. “That decision is idiocy” attacks the decision; the person who made it would be an idiot, which is a different word. You can talk about the idiocy of a rule (the stupid quality) or about these idiocies (the stupid things themselves). It is a strong, sharp word, used when people are angry or joking, not in a careful meeting. Older medical English used it for a disability; that use is outdated and , and you should not copy it. Stick to the everyday sense: this is extremely stupid.
組成From French idiotie, from Old French idiot. It replaced earlier forms like idiotacy and idiotry. Equivalent to idiot + -cy, an ending that names a state or a kind of act.
