Iago is a man in Shakespeare’s play Othello. On the outside he is Othello’s ; on the inside he is his enemy. He lies on purpose: he tells Othello that , Othello’s wife, is secretly with another man (Cassio). Othello believes him and kills her. Iago is not confused and not merely “bad” in a cartoon way — he is cruel, and he is good at sounding like a friend. People later call someone “an Iago” when a person smiles at you and ruins you with whispers. The play is old; that kind of person is not. The name is the Welsh and Spanish form of James. It goes back through Latin Iacobus and Greek to the Hebrew name Jacob, from a story about a baby holding his ’s heel. So Iago, James, Jacob, Jacques, and the Iago inside Santiago are the same name in different country clothes.

組成From Welsh, Spanish, Portuguese, and Galician Iago, from Latin Iacobus (“James”), from Ancient Greek Iákōbos, from Hebrew ya‘ăqṓḇ (“Jacob”, literally “he will heel”), from ‘āqḗḇ (“heel”) and the story of Jacob’s birth in Genesis. It is a doublet of Yago, Jago, James, Jacob, Jacques, and Santiago.
