Santiago is the capital of Chile, a long country on the west side of South America. It is Chile’s biggest city, and the country’s industrial and money centre — factories, banks, and government sit there. People say the name the Spanish way. The name itself is Spanish for Saint James, and many towns in the Spanish-speaking world share it, so “Santiago” alone does not tell you which place someone means until they add Chile. Though actually, in Taiwan the same four Chinese characters are also used for San Diego in the United States, which is a different city in a different country; the country name is what keeps them apart.
