A hypocrite is a person who pretends to have beliefs or opinions they do not really have. We say it with : you cannot trust the face they show. The word is strong and personal; calling someone a hypocrite is an attack on their character, not a small grammar note. Though actually, in everyday fights people pin it on anyone who is inconsistent, even when the person is tired, scared, or still learning, not putting on an act. The older Greek sense was an actor on a stage — someone answering in a play, wearing a part. That picture still helps: a hypocrite is playing a role in life.

組成From Old French ypocrite (modern French hypocrite), from Latin hypocrita, from Ancient Greek ὑποκριτής (hupokritḗs), “actor, hypocrite,” from ὑποκρίνομαι (hupokrínomai), “to answer, act, feign.” It replaced Old English līċettere.
