Hypocrisy is when someone pretends to hold beliefs, rules, or feelings that they do not really have. They talk one way and live another, and we use the word to show we . A politician who lectures on honesty while hiding a lie, or a friend who you for being late and then arrives late themselves, is showing hypocrisy. It names the gap, not a gentle mistake. Though actually, people also stretch it: almost anyone who fails their own standard can be called a in an argument, even when they are struggling rather than putting on a show. The tidy dictionary picture is a mask; real talk is messier, and sometimes the word is just a weapon.

Via Old French and Late Latin from Greek hupókrisis 'stage acting, pretense'.

組成From Middle English ipocrisie, from Old French ypocrisie, from Late Latin hypocrisis, from Ancient Greek ὑπόκρισις (hupókrisis), “answer, stage acting, pretense.” Greek hypo- (under) + krínō (judge, decide), via a verb that meant to answer on stage and then to play a part. It replaced Old English līċettung.
