A hypochondriac is someone who keeps worrying that they are ill, or about to be ill, even when they are really not. They notice every twinge, imagine the worst, and often need a lot of reassurance. The word can be an adjective too: a hypochondriac fear, a hypochondriac habit of checking. Doctors still use it; friends use it more loosely, and it can sound unkind if you throw it at someone who is simply anxious. Though actually, calling a person a hypochondriac does not mean they never get sick — it means their fear of illness has a life of its own.
