In this meaning, hyperbolic is the adjective for that stretching way of talking: describing something as much bigger, smaller, worse, or better than it actually is. A hyperbolic story piles on drama. A hyperbolic claim in an promises the moon. It can sound a little like essay English; in speech people more often say 'over the top'. It is not a compliment in careful talk. If a review is hyperbolic, you may not trust it, because the feeling has run ahead of the facts. Though actually, the same spelling also appears in maths for a kind of curve, and that use has nothing to do with drama. The room tells you which job the word has. Here we are in the language room: over-the-top describing, not geometry. It is not the same as hyper, which is energy in a person.
