Hyperbole is a way of describing something by saying it is much bigger, smaller, worse, or better than it actually is — on purpose, so the feeling lands. 'I've told you a million times' is not a number; it is hyperbole. English loves it in jokes, complaints, love talk, and . The listener is meant to feel the size, not to count. It is not automatically a lie. A lie hides the truth. Hyperbole often shows the truth and then paints it huge. Still, if the other person does not know you are stretching, they may believe the huge version, so it is risky with money, promises, and news. It is a slightly school-ish noun; on the street people just say you are making it sound bigger than it is. Say it with four beats and the stress in the middle: hy-PER-buh-lee, not like 'bowl'.
組成From Middle English iperbole / yperbole, from Latin hyperbolē, from Ancient Greek huperbolḗ 'excess, exaggeration': hupér 'above, beyond' + bállō 'to throw'. Same Greek source as hyperbola, which took a different job in English.
