A hydroelectric system makes electricity from moving water. A river is held by a dam; the water falls and turns big wheels; those wheels drive machines that make electric current. The river keeps running, so people call this renewable, but building the dam changes the land and the fish — the tidy “clean and simple” story is tidier than the real place. The word is an adjective: a hydroelectric dam, hydroelectric power, a hydroelectric plant. Some countries it in speech to hydro. It is not the same as hydraulic. Hydraulic is liquid pressure doing mechanical work (often with oil). Hydroelectric is water making electricity.
