Hybridization is the process of forming a new type of plant or animal from two existing types, so the new type has some qualities from each. Scientists do this with roses, rice, cattle. The new living thing is a hybrid; hybridization is the making of it. A mule is a famous hybrid (horse and donkey), though people use the word a lot for plant breeding and lab work. This is the American spelling with z; British English often hybridisation. People sometimes stretch the word to music, languages, or machines when two kinds blend, but the core sense here is living things. Chemistry class has a more special sense — how parts of an atom mix — which is not about breeding at all.
