A hummock is a very small hill: a little rounded rise in the ground, not a real mountain and often not even a proper hill you would name. You meet the word in nature writing, geography, and talk about wet land or ice. A hummock in a marsh is a small dry bump; on frozen sea, ice can pile into hummocks. It is not an everyday city word. If you only need small hill, hillock is a close cousin; hummock often feels more like a bump or knoll than a place with a path up it.
