To humanize a place or a system is to make it easier to live with — more comfortable, more fitting for real people, less cold or machine-like. You humanize a hospital by giving patients quiet and dignity. You humanize a workplace by changing rules that treat people like numbers. This is a fairly formal verb; you meet it in design, management, and social talk. British spelling is often humanise. The word is human + -ize, make (more) human. There is also a path from humane + -ize, and that older flavour — make kinder — still lives in some uses: to humanize a character in a story is to make them feel real and easy to care about. The sense you need first, though, is the one about places and systems. Though actually, humanize does not mean turn into a human. A robot that is humanized is only made to feel closer to people.
