A huckster is someone who tries to sell things in a , not-honest way. The word is not kind; you say it to show you do not respect that person. Long ago it was a fairly plain job-word: a small trader who went around selling goods from a pack or a stall. That older sense is mostly gone. Today newspapers and angry customers use it for a person who talks too loud, stretches the truth, and cares more about the sale than about you. You hear it about ads, late-night TV sellers, and sometimes politicians, not only shop people. It sounds a little old-fashioned and ; in everyday talk people more often say a salesman or a con man. The ending -ster marks a person (as in youngster). The first part comes from old Low German or Dutch words for going around selling.

組成From Middle English hukster, probably from Low German or Dutch words meaning “to go around selling” (Middle Low German höken, Middle Dutch hokester / hoeken), from an old Germanic root to do with bending or squatting. By the look of the modern spelling it is huck + -ster (a person-suffix). Compare hawkster.
