A houseplant is a plant you grow inside your house because you like how it looks — on a , a desk, a shelf. It is not a farm crop, and it is not (usually) a garden plant left out in the rain. Common ones are leafy green plants and small flowering pots. Indoors the air can be dry and the light weak, so they need water and light in a careful way: the house is not a forest. American English often houseplant as one word; you also see house plant.
