Hopscotch is the children's game where you draw a row of squares on the ground — chalk on the pavement is the classic picture — throw a little stone into a square, and hop from square to square on one foot to fetch it. Children play it; adults mostly remember it. The squares are the scotch: an old word for a scratch or a scored line, not anything to do with Scotland. You hop, and you follow the scratches. People also stretch it as a verb, usually in newspapers: to hopscotch through a city is to jump from place to place with no long stay. That stretch is informal. The playground game is the home meaning.
