This is a very offensive name for a white person. In the United States it has been used by Black speakers as a racial insult. It is meant to hurt. You must not use this word — not as a joke, not in a song you repeat, not to try on a friend’s skin colour.
The history is messy. The word most likely comes from , an older American name for a Hungarian or other eastern-European factory worker, which some people then stretched to mean any white person. There is also a possible African source, Wolof xonq (“red” or “pink”), a word used in some African languages for white men — but that is only a possible source, not a sure one. As a term of racial abuse it became widely known from about 1967, when the Black Panther Party used it as a hard reply to racist insults aimed at Black people. An older sense from 1946 meant a factory hand; that is not the meaning people hear now.
Though actually, you may also meet honky inside honky-tonk (a noisy bar with country music). That is a different path, and it does not make this insult safe.
組成Most likely from hunky (“Hungarian, Slav, eastern European; later any white person”), a shortening of Hungarian used in African-American speech. Another possible source is Wolof xonq (“red, pink”). Sense “factory hand” from 1946; as racial abuse, spread from 1967. Compare hunky, bohunk.
