A man who is hunky is sexually attractive and has a big, strong body — broad shoulders, solid arms, the look of someone who could lift heavy things. It is informal and a little cheeky: friends, magazines, and films use it; a school essay usually should not. It is almost always about men. Calling a woman hunky sounds odd to most speakers. That sense is simply hunk (a solid piece, then a solid-looking man) plus -y. The word has other lives that do not belong in the same sentence. There is an older American noun, often unkind: a Hungarian person, or more loosely an immigrant labourer from eastern Europe. That one probably comes from Hungarian plus a small -y ending; people compare it with bohunk and with honky / honkey. You may meet it in old writing, but you should not copy it. Older American slang also used hunky to mean “fine, all right,” in the same neighbourhood as hunky-dory, though you will rarely hear that on its own now.
