Honduras is a country in Central America, between Guatemala and . It also touches El Salvador, which tidy one-line maps sometimes leave out. In English the country is Honduras; a person or thing from there is . The name was borrowed from Spanish honduras, “depths,” for the deep water off the north coast. People also repeat a story that Columbus, on his last voyage in 1502, thanked God for leaving those depths. That quote is alleged, not proven — a nice tale, not a sure fact.
