Homophobia is a strong dislike, unfair treatment, or fear aimed at gay people — people who love someone of the same sex. You will hear it about cruel jokes, hard family talk, or rules that treat gay people badly. The ending - makes it sound like a doctor's fear, the way some people cannot go near spiders. Though actually, a lot of what we call homophobia is not shaking with fear; it is anger, making fun, or looking away. News writers and teachers use the word. Some people now throw it at anyone they disagree with about gay rights, and other people say that stretches it too far. Keep the core: it is about treating gay people as if they are wrong or dangerous, not about a fear of men in general.

Coined in 1971 from homo- (short for homosexual) + -phobia.
1971 年造字，由 homo-「同性戀」加 -phobia「恐懼」。
組成Latin homo (“man”) + -phobia (“fear”). That first piece looks as if the word should mean “fear of men”, but English does not use it that way.
