A homeworker is someone whose paid job is done in their own house, not in an office or a factory. In British English the word is older than “work from home.” For a long time it meant people — often women — who did piecework at the kitchen table: sewing, packing, assembling small things for a company, paid per item. That work could be poorly paid and lonely, and labour stories still use homeworker in that sense. Today some people also use it for anyone whose workplace is their home, including laptop office work. Even so, “working from home” or “remote worker” is what you hear more now for the laptop kind. Homeworker can still carry a hint of the older, outwork meaning, especially in news about workers’ rights. It is not a homemaker: a homemaker looks after the house; a homeworker is doing a job for pay.
