1. 1

A homestay is a plan where you stay in a local family’s house while you study or travel, not in a hotel. You eat with them, sleep in a spare room, and practise the language in the kitchen. Though actually, the English looks simple — home + stay — but the set meaning we use for study trips was also shaped by Japanese ホームステイ, and English then borrowed that package back. In Taiwan, students say homestay and 寄宿家庭. Older people may still picture a school trip; younger people use it for working holidays too.

    家庭寄宿、寄宿家庭(不是民宿:民宿是小旅館,homestay 是住在當地人家裡)
