A homemaker is家庭主婦(homemaker)是 a person whose work is the home一個以家庭為工作的人: cooking煮飯, cleaning打掃, looking after the family照顧家人, keeping daily life running維持日常生活運作 — and who does not have another paid job outside而且沒有其他外面的支薪工作。Dictionaries often say字典常常寫著 "a woman"「一個女性」, and for a long time而且長久以來 that was the picture people had這就是大家心中的印象。
Older English used for much the same idea; homemaker sounded a little more respectful, as if running a home were real work, which it is. Though actually, a man can be a homemaker too, and some people now say stay-at-home parent to leave gender out of it.
Older English舊式英文 used housewife用housewife這個字 for much the same idea來表達很類似的概念; homemaker sounded a little more respectful而homemaker聽起來比較尊重一點, as if running a home were real work好像經營一個家真的是一份工作, which it is而它確實是。Though actually不過事實上, a man can be a homemaker too男性也可以是homemaker, and some people now say而現在有些人會說 stay-at-home parent stay-at-home parent(在家的父/母親) to leave gender out of it好避開性別的問題。
The word is ordinary and a little old-fashioned-kind, not slang.
The word is這個字很 ordinary and a little old-fashioned-kind普通、帶點溫和的老派感, not slang不是俚語。
It is not a : a is paid to clean someone else’s house. And it is not a person who builds houses. The “maker” here is the person who makes a place work as a home, not a builder.
It is not a housekeeper它不是housekeeper(管家): a housekeeper is paid管家是受僱 to clean someone else's house來打掃別人的房子的。And it is not a person而且也不是指 who builds houses蓋房子的人。The "maker" here這裡的「maker」 is the person who makes a place work as a home指的是讓一個地方運作成一個家的人, not a builder而不是建築工人。
