A homemaker is a person whose work is the home: cooking, cleaning, looking after the family, keeping daily life running — and who does not have another paid job outside. Dictionaries often say “a woman”, and for a long time that was the picture people had. Older English used housewife for much the same idea; homemaker sounded a little more respectful, as if running a home were real work, which it is. Though actually, a man can be a homemaker too, and some people now say stay-at-home parent to leave gender out of it. The word is ordinary and a little old-fashioned-kind, not slang. It is not a housekeeper: a housekeeper is paid to clean someone else’s house. And it is not a person who builds houses. The “maker” here is the person who makes a place work as a home, not a builder.
