Hollywood is a part of Los Angeles, in California, in the United States. Film studios grew there, so the name jumped from the place to the business. When people say “Hollywood,” they often mean the American film world as a whole — the stars, the big movies, the awards — not only those few streets. You might say someone “went to Hollywood” to become an actor, or that a film has a “Hollywood ending,” where everything turns out happy. The neighbourhood was named by a land seller, H. J. Whitley, from holly + wood: holly trees and a wood. Later the word also picked up a looser, darker use: a rich, shiny world that can feel fake or badly behaved. Though actually, a lot of filming now happens far from that one neighbourhood. The name still stands for the industry.
