    Holly is a small tree or bush with dark green leaves that have sharp points, like little teeth. In winter it stays green, and it grows bright red berries. At Christmas, people cut holly branches and use the leaves and berries as decoration — on a door, in a wreath, on a table. The red and green look cheerful, but the berries are not food; they can make you sick if you eat them. When people say “holly” in December, they often mean those cut branches, not a tree still growing in a garden. The English name is very old. It comes from Old English holeġn (also holen), later in Middle English to holly. Further back it is a West Germanic plant name (*hulis). Some scholars think that name may go back to a very old root meaning “to beat” or “to break,” but that last step is only a possibility. There is also a girl’s name Holly — but here we mean the plant.
