A holdall is a big, soft bag. You put clothes and other things in it when you go away, for a weekend or a holiday. It is not a hard suitcase with a stiff shell, and it is not a tiny handbag. It is the kind of bag you can stuff. The name is almost a little joke: it holds all — it holds everything you need. People say holdall mainly in British English. In American English they more often say duffel bag, gym bag, or just bag. It is an ordinary everyday word, not fancy: you would write it on a packing list, not in a law paper. Some holdalls have a zip on top and two handles; some have a shoulder strap. People also stretch it a little: any big bag you dump things into might get called a holdall, even if you are only going to the sports centre, not travelling far.
