    If boots are hobnailed, the bottoms have short, thick nails with fat heads in. The nails make the leather last longer and give a grip on wet or rough ground. Farm workers, soldiers, and miners used to wear them. You meet the word more in history and books than in a shoe shop today; modern boots use rubber instead. It is a workman's word.
