If you are hoarse, or your voice is hoarse, you speak in a low, rough voice. It sounds , not smooth — the way you sound after a cold, after shouting at a match, or after crying hard. Your throat often feels sore as well. It is about how the voice sounds, not how quiet you are trying to be: you can be hoarse and still try to shout, and it just comes out rough and weak. People also say a hoarse whisper. Informal to neutral; everyone uses it. 'I'm hoarse' and 'I've gone hoarse' are both natural after a long night of talking. Nothing to do with a horse, though the two words look like cousins and that spelling trap is famous. They are not family.
組成From Middle English hors, hos, from Old English hās. From an old Germanic adjective; cousins of it still mean 'hoarse' in Norwegian and Swedish (hes). Not from horse.
