HIV HIV is是 a virus一種病毒 — a tiny living thing一個微小的生物 that可以 can get into進入 a person's body一個人的身體 and且 stay there留在裡面。It它 attacks攻擊 the body's defence system身體的防禦系統, the part that is supposed to fight other illnesses那個本來要對抗其他疾病的部分。

People mostly pick it up through sex without protection, through blood (for example shared needles), or sometimes from a mother to her baby. You cannot catch it from a hug, from sharing a meal, from a toilet seat, or from a mosquito.

People大家 mostly主要是 pick it up透過 through sex without protection沒有防護的性行為, through blood透過血液 (for example shared needles例如共用針頭), or or sometimes有時 from a mother to her baby從母親傳給嬰兒。You你 cannot不會 catch it感染 from a hug從擁抱, from sharing a meal從共餐, from a toilet seat從馬桶座, or or from a mosquito從蚊子傳染。

That last part matters, because fear has taught a lot of stories, and those stories have hurt people.

HIV and AIDS are not the same thing, though people mix them up all the time. HIV is the virus. AIDS is a later stage, when the defence system has been badly damaged and other illnesses move in. With today’s medicine, many people with HIV live long, ordinary lives and never reach that stage — though actually, that was not true a few decades ago, and older books still talk as if HIV and AIDS were one name.
