A hippie is someone, especially in the 1960s, who opposed violence in a peaceful way and often wore unusual clothes, had long hair, and took drugs for pleasure. Hippies talked about love, music, and living more freely than the tidy world of jobs and short hair. The word appears from 1953 as a usually variant of hipster — someone who thought they were hip, meaning in the know. Later many people wore the name with pride; others still use it as a mild tease for someone very free-spirited, into nature, or dressed that way. Though actually, the tidy picture is tidier than the people: not every long-haired young person in those years was a hippie, and not every hippie lived the same life. It can describe things too: hippie clothes, a hippie café. The tone depends on who says it: fond, joking, or a little . Informal.
組成From 1953, a usually disparaging variant of hipster. Hipster itself comes from hip, slang for “in the know, cool.”
