Hinterland is an area of land far from the coast, far from large rivers, or far from the busy places where people live — the inland country behind the front. A quiet town hours from the sea can be in the hinterland. Map writers and news writers also use it for the inland area that a port or a city serves: the farms and towns that send goods to that harbour. It came into English from German in the late 1800s. People from countries strong at sea were looking from the shore toward the land behind. It is a slightly school-and-news word, more maps than chat, but it is not rare.

組成Borrowed from German Hinterland, from hinter (“behind”) + Land (“land”), a cousin of English hinder (“back, rear”) + land. First used in English in 1888 by George Chisholm, at first as hinderland; the German spelling became the usual one.
