    In this sense, Hillsborough is the name people use for a deadly crush at a football match in 1989. It happened at Hillsborough Stadium in Sheffield, in northern England, during an FA Cup semi-final. Too many supporters were pushed into a small fenced area at the front of a stand; they were crushed and could not get out. 96 people died at the time, and hundreds were ; years later a further death was officially linked, so in Britain the number remembered is often 97. The fans were blamed at first. Later reports showed serious failures in how the crowd was policed and how the ground was designed, and that the supporters were not at fault. The disaster changed British football: fences in front of standing fans came down, and big stadiums moved toward grounds. In the UK, saying Hillsborough on its own often means this event, not just a place. It is a heavy name; people speak it with care.

組成From hills + borough. Borough is an old word for a town, or a part of a town. The stadium takes its name from the Hillsborough area of Sheffield.
