Hilarity is laughter, or the noisy, happy feeling when people are having fun and laughing together. It is a noun, and it sounds a little formal or written. In a book you might read that the room filled with hilarity. In spoken English, people more often say laughter, or everyone was laughing. Newspapers and jokes sometimes say much hilarity , which is a slightly knowing way of saying people found it very funny. It is the laughing and the high spirits, not the joke itself.
