High-tops are sports shoes that cover your ankles. This is the form you will hear most, because you buy and wear a pair. One shoe is a high-top; the pair is high-tops. They are the tall kind of sneakers or trainers, especially for basketball, though plenty of people wear them on ordinary days too. Informal, everyday English — the same idea as high-top, just the pair.
