If someone is high-handed, they use their power in a way that feels unfair and a bit rude. They decide for other people without asking, and they talk as if their view is the only one that counts. A high-handed boss might change the rules overnight and expect everyone to smile. A high-handed official might pass a rule and not listen to the people who have to live with it. The word is a little formal — you meet it in news, complaints, and serious talk more than in chat between friends — and it is never a compliment. Though actually, people stretch it: a parent or a teacher can be called high-handed too, if they shut the door on discussion. Strict can still be fair. High-handed is strict plus “I am above you, so I do not need to explain.”
high-handed 說的是掌權的人用權力的方式，讓人覺得不公平，也有點無禮。他替別人決定，不先問人家的意見，說話好像自己的看法才算數。例如老闆一夜之間改規定，還要大家笑著接受，就是這個味道，例句是「A high-handed boss might change the rules overnight and expect everyone to smile.」
這個字偏正式，常出現在新聞、抱怨和認真的討論裡，朋友之間聊天不太用。它從來不是讚美，所以不要拿來誇人。
有些人會把它用得比較寬，例如家長或老師如果把討論的門關上，也可以被說成 high-handed。不過它的核心是：嚴格仍然可以公平，high-handed 則是嚴格加上「我比你高，所以不用解釋」。
組成high (above others, superior) + handed (the way you treat people). A “high hand” is the hand of someone who will not come down to your level.
