Hideously is the adverb from hideous. It means in a way that is extremely ugly or extremely unpleasant. You can put it in front of an adjective to make that adjective much louder: hideously ugly, hideously expensive, hideously . When people say hideously expensive, they are not talking about looks. They are using it as a strong very, and in a bad way. That stretch is common in speech and magazines. Next to a verb it often stays closer to the old sense: the wound was hideously swollen. It is still a dramatic word, heavier than just very.
