    Hideous means extremely ugly or extremely unpleasant — so strong you almost pull back. It can describe a face, a building, a colour, a noise, a crime, or a situation. A hideous shirt is ugly. A hideous accident is awful to think about. A hideous lie is ugly in a moral way, not in a visual way. If you only mean not pretty, ugly is enough; hideous turns the volume all the way up. Though actually, in casual talk people sometimes laugh it onto something merely very bad, like a hideous mess in the kitchen, a little looser than the old sense of terror. It looks as if it might come from hide, but it does not.

Scholars think it probably goes back to old Germanic words for terror, related to Old English egesa, fear. Another origin has been offered, but it is disputed. It is not hide + ous.
