1. 1

Hibernation is the long winter rest itself — the state an animal is in when it . During hibernation the body runs on a very low setting: the heart slows, breathing slows, and the animal uses almost no energy. It is a season-long strategy, not a nap. You can talk about going into hibernation, coming out of hibernation, or a period of hibernation. People also stretch it, just as they stretch the verb: a quiet winter at home, or a computer’s power-off-and-save mode, can be called hibernation. The animal meaning is still the one everything else copies.
