Heroin is a very strong drug made from , which comes from the poppy. People take it for a sudden rush of pleasure and calm, but it is illegal in most countries, and the body can start to need it very fast. It is a heavy word: you meet it in news, crime stories, and health class, not in light chat. Though actually, it did not begin as a street drug. In the 1890s a German company sold it as a medicine for pain and coughs, under the brand name Heroin. The name was meant to feel like a 'hero' — something powerful that would sweep the problem away. Doctors later saw how dangerous it was, and it was banned. Today the tidy school fact is 'illegal drug'; the fuller truth is that it was first a trademarked medicine, then a public-health disaster.

組成The English word comes from the German brand name Heroin (1890s). That name was built from the old Greek word for 'hero' plus the chemists' ending -in (as in many drug names). It was meant to suggest a fast, sweeping painkiller and cough medicine. Some people also link the name to an old 'heroic' style of doctoring; the Greek 'hero' piece is the part we can stand behind.
