A hermit is someone who lives alone and keeps life very simple. In the old and religious use, this is a choice: the person goes away from town, often to pray or to live close to God, sometimes in a desert, a cave, or a small hut. English still uses that serious meaning. Though actually, friends also joke “he’s a hermit” about someone who stays home and does not go out. That joke is looser than the dictionary picture; a real hermit is not only shy, and the loneliness is the point of the life, not an accident. The word comes from a Greek word for an empty, place — a “person of the desert”. It looks a little like , but that is a different word and a different story.
