A heptathlon is a sports contest made of seven events. One athlete does all seven — a mix of running, jumping, and throwing — and the points are added up. It is not seven of the same kind. often call it a women’s contest, and that is the picture most people have: at the outdoor Olympics, women do the heptathlon and men do the ten-event decathlon. Though actually, men also compete in a heptathlon, usually indoors, with a slightly different set of events. So “women’s seven-event contest” is the usual story, but it is not the whole map. You will hear the word from sports reporters, PE teachers, and Olympic coverage. In casual talk people may just say the seven events.
組成From hepta- + -athlon. hepta- is from Ancient Greek ἑπτά (heptá, “seven”); -athlon is from Ancient Greek ἆθλον (âthlon, “contest, prize”).
