A henpecked man is one whose wife tells him what to do all the time, and he is afraid to disagree. The picture is a hen pecking with her beak, and the husband as the one who gets pecked. You almost always hear it as henpecked husband. The word is old, jokey, and rather unkind: it paints the wife as a nag and the man as weak. Though actually, younger speakers often avoid it, because it treats a marriage like a cartoon. You may still meet it in older books, sitcoms, and complaints. It is an adjective. There is a verb to henpeck, but the adjective is the form students will see. It is used of husbands in this traditional joke. It is not the usual word for a woman whose husband controls her — that is a different, more serious matter, and people then speak of control or abuse.
