Hemp is a tall plant with a tough stem. For a very long time people grew it to make rope, cloth, paper, and oil from the seeds. Though actually the cloth word canvas is a cousin of this plant-name: canvas was once hemp cloth, even if most canvas today is cotton or something else. Hemp belongs to the same plant family as cannabis, the plant some people use as a drug. Careful speakers now keep two uses apart. Industrial hemp is grown for rope, cloth, and oil, and it has very little of the chemical that makes you high; other cannabis is grown for that chemical. In ordinary English, hemp leans toward the useful-plant meaning, and cannabis or marijuana toward the drug. The word itself is old farm English, not a lab word.
