A helping is the amount of food someone gives you, or that you take for yourself — a helping of rice, a small helping of soup. “Would you like a second helping?” means another serving, not “shall I help you again?” Home talk and restaurant talk; not fancy. Though actually the same spelling is also the everyday -ing form of the verb help (“She is helping him”), but this dictionary sense is only the food amount. If there is no plate in the picture, people will not hear this meaning.
