Hellenistic describes the history, books, and art of ancient Greece and the lands east of it around that sea, after Greek ways of life had spread far beyond Greece. The centre of that world was Alexandria in Egypt. The period went on until about 30 BC, when Egypt became part of the Roman Empire. Historians speak of Hellenistic kingdoms, Hellenistic art, and Hellenistic cities. The culture mixed Greek ideas with local ones; it is Greek-influenced, not “only inside Greece”. The word belongs to history and art books more than to daily talk. It is used of the age after Alexander the Great. Though actually, it is not a fancy second word for Greek or Hellenic: it names that later, spreading time.
組成From German hellenistisch, from Ancient Greek Ἑλληνιστής (Hellēnistḗs, “one who uses the Greek language”), from Ἑλλάς (Hellás, “Greece”). By surface analysis, Hellenist + -ic.
