Hellenic means connected with Greece or the Greeks, especially the history, society, and art of the ancient Greeks. Official English still uses it in names such as the Hellenic Republic (the formal name of Greece) and the Hellenic Navy. In a history class it often points to the Greece of the old self-ruling cities, not the later mix-and-spread age called Hellenistic. It is a formal book-and-officials adjective. You would say Greek food in ordinary talk, not Hellenic food; though actually, writers do say the Hellenic world or Hellenic studies when they want a school-book tone. Some language books also use Hellenic for the Greek family of languages.
組成Learned borrowing from Ancient Greek Ἑλληνικός (Hellēnikós, “of Greece or Greeks”), from Ancient Greek Ἑλλάς (Hellás, “Greece”). By surface analysis, Hellen + -ic. First attested around 1640.
