Heidi is the little girl at the centre of the Swiss children's book Heidi, written by Johanna Spyri (1827–1901) and published in 1880. In the story she lives in the Alps with her grandfather. The book travelled far, and films followed — the best-known in English is the 1937 film with Shirley Temple as Heidi. Because of the book, Heidi also became a given name outside Switzerland. When a teacher, a quiz, or a film listing says Heidi, they usually mean this character and this story, not just any girl with that name. Though actually, plenty of real people are called Heidi now; the capital letter and the talk of mountains, grandfathers, or Shirley Temple are how you know which one is meant.
